I went to Dr. Import (as Dr. Independent is now known) because a Volvo owner friend recommended them. The first few visits were okay -- they were about as expensive than the dealer but did not require appointments weeks in advance. When I got an estimate to fix some stuff, I began looking elsewhere. It was very high.
It so happened that on that visit I had work done, including an after market radiator and hose kit. Unfortunately, the hose blew off during the 24 month warranty. I had my car towed to the new mechanic, who determined that the after market hose was not of the same quality and design as the Volvo hose, and this contributed to its failure. The damage to my Volvo was significant, including a rebuilt engine. I had the work done by the mechanic I had been going to after Dr. Import, then asked Dr. Import to reimburse me. They flatly refused.
I had to sue them in Small Claims court. During testimony, the president of Dr. Import actually claimed that it would have cost only $877 to rebuild the engine of my Volvo S60R, which has a high performance engine! The judge rules in my favor, and I received a settlement of $3000 from Dr. Import. I had not checked BBB before doing business with Dr. Import, where I would have learned of others' experiences. They are not a member, and I understand why. They needlessly jerked me around, but the judge realized that their representative blatantly lied during the court case. Beware of this place! When they give you a tour of the place on your first visit, they show you the parts department stocked with Volvo boxes. But they do not always use original parts, as in my case. When they fail, they will fight you tooth and nail not to honor their warranty. There are much better Volvo mechanics out there that charge much fairer prices and actually use original Volvo parts.
