Adapt Language Services (Juliette Dinh and Jerome Ferreira) is a fraudulent company that uses the same trick to cheat translators (please see another translator’s complaint filed against them on 7-23-10). Their chicanery goes as follows: they outsource an urgent translation project. They offer a ridiculously low price. If the translator refuses, as I did, they quickly agree to a higher price—twice as much in my case. The translator completes the work. They accuse the translator of submitting substandard work and don’t pay. I am a court-certified interpreter, have translated for 20 years, have several publications, and proofread other translations on a regular basis. I know what I am doing. When I first saw the “proofread” copy of my own translation, I almost fell off the chair—it was all marked in red. It took me some time to realize that the copy was 99% fake. There was 1% of reasonable remarks (apparently by a real proofreader, for example, No. instead of #) and 99% of fabricated corrections (apparently made by Juliette Dinh herself). They were obviously made-up because some were grammatically incorrect and others awkward substitutes. To justify her claim that my translation was terrible and unusable, Juliette Dinh included in her e-mail to me “comments” of the proofreader. They were quite scathing. If I had taken them seriously, I should have quit translating forever. But it quickly became obvious that the comments were fake, too. They had nothing to do with my translation. For example, the “proofreader” said there were a lot of misspelled words and grammatical errors. Yet in the lakes of red ink in the proofread copy of my translation there was not a single correction of a misspelled word or a grammatical error. Juliette Dinh apparently copied and pasted a proofreader’s comments from another project. Unfortunately for her, she did a sloppy job copying and pasting; any reasonable person can see it with the naked eye (I’ve kept all this nonsense). Curiously, Dinh has just done another sloppy copy-and-paste job—-this time on this very page. In response to my complaint to the Better Business Bureau, she copied and pasted her earlier response to another translator’s complaint in July 2010. Unfortunately for her, she didn’t even notice that she was responding to me (a man) calling me “she” and “her.” The ass’s ears stick out yet again. Yet, she's accused me of using a machine translation. The same accusation she used against the other translator. What gall, really. Translators and consumers, BEWARE. Eugene Alper
